Born and raised in Maine, Josh Hanna grew up in and around the building trades, spending his summers working with his father on all things plumbing, heating, and electrical. It was a family affair, almost tradition at that point, with two grandfathers, and an uncle, also being self-employed mechanical contractors. The work was often dirty and uncomfortable, as most of the trades are, but the jobsites and the people were real and so were their needs. In his family, it was more than a job. It was service to your community, with contractors and customers alike often becoming more like close friends or family than anything.
“Joining the family business” was sometimes discussed but, as with most parents, his father wanted more for his son and encouraged him to continue his education instead.
In 2007, after finishing high school, he took that advice and enrolled at the University of Maine at Orono, attending full time until 2011, when he graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Economics.
It was time to join the workforce, but where? And doing what? Josh quickly realized that many of the career paths that were open to him now would lead him away from the people, jobsites, and state that he had grown to love, but the goal was a simple life in Maine, being a part of the community, and serving that community's needs.
In the fall of 2011, Josh took a sales and customer service position at Hammond Lumber Company that once again put him back in the thick of it. He spent the next 6 years serving general contractors and homeowners alike, learning about the latest construction materials and building practices as well as jobsite planning and logistics. It was a new aspect of the industry for him. Fast paced and interesting, providing valuable knowledge and experience, but ultimately, it wasn’t quite what he was looking for.
Josh went on to work for FW Webb Company in 2017, where he once again connected with the mechanical side of residential construction, specializing in HVAC design and sales. From heat pumps to central air and dual fuel systems, balanced ventilation to dehumidification and controls, it was technical and challenging, yet still something was missing.
The jobsite environments. The personal interactions. The hands-on work. It was time to finally bring it all together.
